In Work: The Bell

Seattle Phil, 01/08/2009

Greetings from within the belly of the rehearsal space, and happy new year to you! It’s 2009 and the orchestra’s back at it—that’s right, the second concert is fast approaching and overall, we’re down to the final tweaks and adjustments.

Bar any cobwebs that may have formed during the holiday’s weather-induced coziness, of course.

This upcoming concert is going to feature Khachaturian’s Second Symphony, nicknamed “The Bell”, and while some of us have struggled during the early stages of learning this piece, there was a distinct charge in the air at rehearsal.Perhaps, by virtue of always learning something new, it can be argued that we may never truly emerge victorious in any such musical work, but tonighy one could sense that victory seemed •that much• closer. The music seemed like it was starting to come together and I think it might be safe to say people were beginning to get excited!

How apropos for this symphony, yes (where am I getting this theme of victory? I encourage you to check out what maestro Stern has to say about this piece in the podcast!).

Next week, we shall rehearse with the guest artists…

For now, I’ll be taking care of some of my own cobwebs.

From deep within the string section, good day! :)
